Why Newsies?

At ACT, we believe young people are capable of making a difference in the world around them.

Newsies Jr. tells the story of a group of young people who refuse to accept the status quo and instead choose to organize, collaborate, and advocate for change. Through this story, students have the opportunity to explore leadership, resilience, and the importance of using their voices to support themselves and others.

The lessons at the heart of Newsies extend far beyond the stage. They remind us that courage is contagious, that community matters, and that meaningful change often begins when ordinary people decide to take action together.

As the newsies themselves would say: "Now is the time to seize the day."

Artistic Expectations

Newsies Jr. is an energetic, ensemble-driven musical that combines acting, singing, and movement in a fast-paced and exciting rehearsal process. Participants will be challenged to develop strong performance skills while working collaboratively to tell a story that relies on the strength of the entire cast.

This production is designed to help performers build confidence, strengthen stage presence, and develop the teamwork skills that are essential both on stage and beyond it. Whether performing as a featured character or as part of the larger ensemble, every student plays an important role in bringing the story to life.

Students should come ready to work hard, support one another, and embrace the joy of creating something bigger than themselves.

Content & Themes

Newsies Jr. explores themes of leadership, courage, social responsibility, teamwork, and standing up for what is right. Through the lens of a true historical event, students will examine how young people can create meaningful change in their communities when they find their voice and work together.

The show contains mild conflict and discussions of economic hardship, labor rights, and social inequality, all presented in an age-appropriate manner.
